Project Introduction

In the very north of the Czech Republic, amidst the beautiful landscape of the Šluknov Hook, a unique place has been taking shape for several years now. A place where neighbors, families, children, experts, artists, and visitors from the Czech Republic, Germany, Europe, and Asia come together. A place that connects Europe and Asia through knowledge, culture, and mutual respect.

That place is the Tibetan House.

Today, we are just one step away from our goal. Let’s open the doors wide to everyone together. Together, we can do it.

Local municipalities, individuals, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the 14th Dalai Lama all support and collaborate on this project.

Who is behind the project, and why is the Tibetan House being built?

We are the Thonmi z. s. association. Since 2012, we’ve been filling the gap in information about the people, culture, political situation—in short, real life—in Asia. Not through stereotypes, but through personal experience, expert knowledge, and years of study.

Among us, you’ll find experts from the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Czech Academy of Sciences, as well as travelers and enthusiasts whose view of the world has been transformed by Asia. We believe that learning about other cultures helps break down prejudices and strengthens mutual understanding.

That’s why we’ve built a unique complex in the border region dedicated to exploring Asian regions. Here, you can walk along the Asian Discovery Trail, peek inside a Mongolian yurt, try out an Uzbek tandoor, visit a Tibetan stupa, meet a herd of yaks, or place a pebble on a Mongolian ovoo—and maybe your wish will come true.

You may know us as Eastern Tunes, the summer festival of Asian music and culture, and the autumn Festival of Lights in the Šluknov Hook, or perhaps we’ve met at lectures, film screenings, a school program day, or one of our creative workshops.

We want to offer more. That’s why we’re working together to build the Tibetan House—a unique project in terms of its design, space, and mission to bring people together across the Šluknov Hook and across continents. Join us—help finish the Tibetan House and support the community center’s activities. Let’s meet more often and build a friendly and tolerant society.
