STORIES OF BORDERS (THE SUDETENLAND AND OTHER BORDER ZONES IN POST 1945 LITERATURE)
Jan Malura (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ostrava)

In recent years, we have witnessed an unprecedented interest in the Sudetenland, especially from writers of different generations. In the past, this was not the case, the border and Czech-German relations were a taboo or strongly ideological topic. The lecture will deal with several literary works and the topic of Sudetenland, first turning to the 1960s to the prose of Vladimír Kornero and Josef Jedlička, then recalling literary reflections on 1989 (Vóclov Vokalek, Zdeněk Šmld). The main attention will be directed to the current form of the Sudetenland and the borderland in literature, including bestsellers (“Sudetenland” by Leoš Kyša; the collection of short stories about the Sudetenland “The Lost Swarm”; detective stories by Petra Klabouchová and Michaela Klevisová). The question will be raised whether today’s wave is just a superficial fashion or it does indicate something deeper. Finally, the lecture will recall the current topic of the Czech-Polish border (Karin Lednickó, Petr Sagitarius) and Polish literary reflections on the Sudetenland.
